About Kent
Portage County, Ohio
Kent is the largest city in Portage County, with about 28,200 people (2020 census). It sits on the Cuyahoga River at the county’s western edge and is home to Kent State University. Settled in 1805 and known for years as Franklin Mills, Kent grew up around water-powered mills on the river. Brady’s Leap, where Captain Samuel Brady is said to have jumped 21 feet across the Cuyahoga around 1780, is now a city park.
Kent is about 21 miles west of Newton Falls as the crow flies, at the western edge of our service area. Downtown, Heritage Park by the old Kent dam opened in 2005. The paved Portage Hike & Bike Trail connects Kent to Ravenna, which makes it easy to get a long walk in with your dog. We’ll take care of the yard.
